Willingness to approach behaviour and feed disappearance of weaned pigs following vaccination with Mycoplasma vaccines

A side by side study in which 1,832 weaned pigs were allocated to 2 different treatment groups and further into 72 nursery pens (25 pigs per pen). 2 weeks after placement a ‘willingness to approach’ (WTA) exercise was conducted in all pens, beginning at 4pm (an estimation of the % of pigs approaching the blinded technician in a 15 second period, following entry to the pen). At 10am the next morning, each pen of pigs was vaccinated with either Ingelvac MycoFLEX® or a single dose mineral oil-based Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae vaccine ("Vaccine S"), depending on treatment group. The second ‘WTA’ exercise was repeated 6 hours after vaccination at 4pm (24 hours after the first assessment) and this value compared to the previous day’s result. In addition, the total feed disappearance per pen was measured for the first 24 and 48 hours, post vaccination.

The reduction in the % WTA post vaccination was significantly greater in the "Vaccine S" group, compared to the Ingelvac MycoFLEX® group (27.05% v 11.38%). The 24 and 48 hour total feed disappearance per pig was significantly less in the "Vaccine S" group pigs, compared to the Ingelvac MycoFLEX® pigs (0 to 24 hour average feed consumption per pig = 2.02kg for the MycoFLEX group and 1.83kg for the "Vaccine S" group).

These findings suggest that ‘WTA’ and feed disappearance may be useful parameters for assessing adverse vaccine reactions. In this case, vaccination with Ingelvac MycoFLEX® resulted in less adverse reactions in the pigs, compared to vaccination with the oil-based vaccine.

Performance of conventional health pigs vaccinated with Ingelvac MycoFLEX® or oil-based 2 dose Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae vaccine ("Vaccine R")

A side by side, field evaluation in which piglets that received either "Vaccine R" (3 and 5 weeks of age, group A) or Ingelvac MycoFLEX® (5 weeks of age, group B) on a conventional, PRRSv and SIV positive pig unit, were compared. A total of 1,254 piglets were divided into 46 pens, with each pen receiving either treatment A or B (except 2 pens which were left as non-vaccinated controls). All vaccinated pigs were immediately monitored for adverse reactions and throughout the following day for feeding behaviour. A subset of each pen was randomly selected for serial blood sampling, slaughter weight and lung lesion scoring.

No difference was found in average daily live weight gain between the treated groups. 27% of pens suffered adverse reactions following vaccination with "Vaccine R", compared to 0% of the Ingelvac MycoFLEX®-vaccinated pigs. During observation on day 2, more pigs were observed at the feeders in the Ingelvac MycoFLEX® pens (2.4 vs.1.6 pigs/pen). Both groups had a statistically significantly lower average % lung lesion score compared to the control pigs, while the Ingelvac MycoFLEX® group had a numerically lower score (5.3 vs. 8.6).

This study demonstrates that equal efficacy can be obtained by using a single dose regime (Ingelvac MycoFLEX® at 5 weeks) compared to a two-dose regime, with pigs exhibiting fewer adverse events following vaccination.
